The Washington Commanders could be getting one of their tailsmen back for the stretch run in 2024.
It seemed as if defensive tackle Jonathan Allen would be missing for the entire campaign after going to injured reserve with a torn pectoral suffered in Week 6 at the Baltimore Ravens. Recent revelations about the complication provided hope. Now, it seems like the former first-round selection is striving to get back involved.
The Commanders officially activated Jonathan Allen's 21-day practice window. That doesn't guarantee anything, but it's a surprising positive nonetheless.
Allen now has three weeks to be activated onto the active roster once again. Considering the Commanders only have three regular-season games remaining, there must be confidence in his ability to feature at some stage. There would be no point in trying otherwise.
Commanders will take things slowly with Jonathan Allen's progress
Much will depend on how Allen responds. Head coach Dan Quinn commended the veteran's work ethic to get to this point. He also revealed that the Commanders won't be rushing anything regarding the process for fear of doing further damage.
Seeing Allen on the practice field on Wednesday represented a huge boost to everyone. The Alabama product's production might be on the slide over the last two years, but he's an inspirational leader within the locker room. That will be needed more than ever if Washington wants to meet raised expectations and reach the postseason.
If the Commanders weren't in the playoff mix, there's a chance Allen would be a little less eager to force the issue. The Pro Bowler has experienced almost nothing but misery since joining the Commanders as a first-round pick. Now that things are trending upward, he wants to participate.
Allen must respond positively to the step-by-step practice process before confidence increases. The Commanders took things slowly with cornerback Marshon Lattimore. They will adopt the same approach in this instance.
There were hints that this might be coming. John Keim of ESPN reported last week that Allen was hopeful he could suit up again this season. That's not set in stone just yet, but the fact he's ready to practice is a positive step.
It's another fascinating dynamic to monitor. The Commanders are dealing with some troubling injury issues right now, especially on the offensive side of the football. Getting an undisputed team leader back in some capacity is only going to help matters.
Allen's future beyond the current campaign is shrouded in mystery right now. He's got one year remaining on his deal and no more guaranteed money attached. Displaying the correct resolve and performing well if he does come back will enhance his chances of seeing out the contract.
An interesting few days await.
