One of the biggest flaws of Ron Rivera's tenure as head coach was failing to find a long-term answer at the quarterback position. But for a brief time, it looked like one underdog story could become the Washington Commanders' answer.

Taylor Heinicke arrived without much fanfare attached. Most saw the signal-caller as a backup option at best, capable of coming in as relief but nothing more. He was sleeping on his sister's couch in Atlanta when the Commanders came calling in 2020. The last time he saw an NFL field before that was in 2018 with the Carolina Panthers.

What followed was a mesmerizing redemption story for the ages. And now, Heinicke has decided to call time on his career.

In an emotional Instagram post, Heinicke officially announced his retirement, ending a 25-year football journey marked by the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. But based on the Washington cult hero's statement, he wouldn't change a thing.

"Many ups and downs throughout the years, but the ups outweigh the downs tenfold. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would've been able to live this life... Excited for this next chapter of my life."

Heinicke managed to stick around for the 2021 campaign after a starring playoff display, and he started. The quarterback completed 65 percent of his passes for 3,419 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. There was a fearless, feast-or-famine mindset that made him an immediate fan favorite. And even though things were far from perfect, he kept driving forward.

Who could forget the win over the 8-0 Philadelphia Eagles? Or the sensational playoff display that almost toppled the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Every fan will have their own personal highlight from Heinicke's whirlwind stop in Washington, and he remains beloved by everyone to this day.

Things eventually fizzled out in Washington. Heinicke joined the Atlanta Falcons after that, and he also spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers last season. Opportunities were scarce this offseason, and he felt this was the right time to hang up his cleats for good.

Heinicke's tale is inspiring. It's a rags-to-riches story that other undrafted players down on their luck aim to emulate. And with $19.34 million in career earnings, it's more than he could have ever imagined when he went undrafted out of Old Dominion.

It's a story of perseverance. It's a story about believing you belong. And for the Commanders, it gave their long-suffering fan base a charge of positivity when it was desperately needed.

That will be Heinicke's lasting legacy in Washington, at least with those who saw him play.
