Much has been made about the Washington Commanders needing another dynamic, productive wide receiver to go alongside Terry McLaurin. General manager Adam Peters has not made a move as yet, but there is no telling if another addition is required.
Brandon Aiyuk has all but talked himself out of joining the Commanders. Stefon Diggs has another legal issue pending, and his wishes to join Washington have also fallen on deaf ears so far. Peters is letting things play out, but a team insider highlighted another name who could come into the equation.
And the possibility centers on someone who's no stranger to Washington fans.
Commanders insider remains intrigued by a Curtis Samuel return for 2026
Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic was intrigued by the possibility of Curtis Samuel returning to the club. While he's suffered plenty of injury problems of late, he is reportedly healthy now. He's also got strong connections to Washington from his first spell with the franchise, and it wouldn't exactly cost the earth to find out if he still has something left in the tank.
"One player who intrigues me is receiver Curtis Samuel. The gamble may always be health-related with him. He’s dealt with a string of injuries throughout his career and has been active for only two full seasons in his nine years in the NFL. I’m told he’s fully healthy. We know he’s very close to McLaurin. He played all three seasons in Washington alongside Dyami Brown, and he’s familiar with receivers coach Bobby Engram."
Samuel featured just six times for the Buffalo Bills last season. He's not a sure thing by any stretch of the imagination, but he's versatile enough to be a dual-threat capable of lining up anywhere on the line of scrimmage or even in the backfield.
The former Ohio State star was solid if not spectacular during his first season in Washington. Samuel may have underperformed compared to his paycheck, but giving him a shot to raise standards in the receiver room might be something Peters considers.
He also comes with far less baggage than Aiyuk or Diggs, though the potential isn't quite there. But this depends on how those in power perceive how those currently around are operating within David Blough's system.
Moving forward with what they have is a risk. However, Peters isn't going to bring in veteran help just for the sake of it.
He needs to find the right guy. He needs to find the right fit. Samuel has concerns, and being on the proverbial scrap heap at this stage might indicate the league is looking the other way. At the same time, his athleticism and ability to make plays are an enticing possibility if he gets a better run of luck on the injury front.
Time will tell...
