Commanders 7-round 2025 NFL mock draft: Clearer needs edition
By Dean Jones
Commanders draft Jordan Burch
- Defensive Line | Oregon Ducks
- Round No. 6 | No. 204 overall
The Washington Commanders lost in the defensive trenches during their disappointing defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles. They have some nice pieces to develop further in the coming years, but adding another via the draft should be considered at some stage.
This bears more significance when one considers the uncertain future of Jonathan Allen. The team leader is out through injury and could be either traded or cut after the season. If this scenario comes to fruition, the Commanders would be relying on what they have if Johnny Newton and Phidarian Mathis continue to improve.
Jordan Burch could be the answer to their problems. The Oregon prospect is a formidable piece on the defensive front with incredible athleticism for a man his size. He's got position versatility to play anywhere across the front with sufficient burst and stout frame to impact proceedings in all phases.
The production sometimes doesn't match the physical profile Burch brings to the table. However, he represents an intriguing development piece with an opportunity to gain reps immediately if he takes on the coaching from Washington's accomplished staff.
Commanders draft Francisco Mauigoa
- Linebacker | Miami Hurricanes
- Round No. 7 | No. 236 overall
The Commanders have an outstanding linebacker tandem spearheading their defensive improvements this season. Frankie Luvu has been nothing short of a revelation since joining in free agency from the Carolina Panthers. He's the future cornerstone piece, so much will depend on what the future holds for Bobby Wagner following the campaign.
Wagner is aging but still playing outstanding football. He's led a supreme culture shift within the Commanders, demanding high standards from his teammates and guiding them through increasing expectations. A new contract should be there if he wants it, but there's just no telling for sure.
Regardless of whether Wagner stayed or not, the Commanders could use another development project that could become influential with more refinement. Francisco Mauigoa has been a tackling machine throughout his college career. He's got sound instincts, a high motor, and displays a willingness to get around the action consistently.
Mauigoa can impact things in the backfield, too. He's got 27 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks since transferring to Miami, so he's well worth a flier with Washington's final pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
