A disappointing loss on Thursday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles proved two things where the Washington Commanders are concerned.

They have made a sensational start better than anyone envisaged. And there is still a long road ahead before they are ready for a Super Bowl challenge.

That won't go unnoticed by general manager Adam Peters as part of his ongoing assessments. The respected front office leader shifted gears slightly by trading for stud cornerback Marshon Lattimore before the deadline. But this remains a long-term project with plenty of flexibility heading into the 2025 offseason.

Washington has over $104 million in salary cap space with 31 players under contract. They also have seven selections during the draft. Both could increase depending on what Peters has up his sleeve.

There is a long way to go and much football left before then. The Commanders have a decent-looking schedule moving forward, so making the postseason is attainable. However, they've not fared well versus contending teams this season, so the needs are becoming clearer for Peters.

Using the Pro Football Network simulator, we took a look at how the Commanders could utilize their 2025 NFL Draft selections in a special seven-round mock. This all starts by bolstering the team's pass-rushing options.

Commanders draft Kyle Kennard

  • Edge Rusher | South Carolina Gamecocks
  • Round No. 1 | Pick No. 23

The Washington Commanders need an explosive edge rusher to give them long-term stability. They have some veteran stopgaps for now. That won't suffice if this resurgent franchise wants to be considered among the leading contenders over time.

Dorance Armstrong Jr is solid but looks like a complimentary piece rather than a legitimate No. 1. Clelin Ferrell has disappointed more often than not. Dante Fowler Jr. has been a nice surprise after most expected him to fill a backup role in 2024.

That said, the Commanders need a promising prospect capable of wreaking havoc. This is an outstanding draft class for defensive linemen. General manager Adam Peters must take advantage.

A chance is taken on Kyle Kennard. The defensive end looked to test himself in the final year of his college career by transferring to South Carolina in the SEC. It was a smart move looking at the way he's applied himself this season.

Kennard has 9.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss in 2024. The prospect boasts exceptional get-off through quick-twitch prowess and an outstanding burst. His pass-rushing moves have refined under improved coaches. He's got the versatility to play with his hand in the dirt or as a stand-up edge. This is something Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. look for within their defensive schematics.

Adding some muscle mass and continuing to increase his pass-rush repertoire is only going to help. Kennard will be a hot name during the evaluation process and is expected to test extremely well at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine.
