Brian Schottenheimer just cracked the window open for a Commanders nightmare

This seemed noteworthy.

Bobby Wagner's influence both on and off the field over the last two seasons left a mark on the Washington Commanders. Although the door hasn't been closed on a return, it's also clear that general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn are intending to get younger at the linebacker position.

This was evidenced by their decision to sign Leo Chenal in free agency. Speculation remains high that Ohio State prospect Sonny Styles is in the mix at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. That would all but confirm Wagner's departure, but it seems pretty clear-cut in any case.

Despite Wagner's age, he's eager to keep on playing for another season. When probed about the possibility by Kay Adams, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer didn't exactly rule out approaching the future Pro Football Hall of Famer at some stage.

Brian Schottenheimer fans flames over Bobby Wagner pursuit as Commanders move on

Schottenheimer was highly complimentary of Wagner during his appearance on the Up and Adams Show, highlighting his competitiveness and longevity. He didn't formally confirm any interest, but it wouldn't be shocking after such a glowing reference.

"We've made some really strong runs at inside linebacker, and it hasn't worked out. You're looking at one of the biggest Bobby Wagner fans in the world. Being in Seattle with him for three years, watching him compete and just talk trash in a good way, I love that guy. And he's still playing at a high level, so we'll see how everything works out. It's an exciting time of year, but Bobby Wagner: total stud."

It's not hard to read between the lines. The Cowboys will probably wait to see if they can find a legitimate difference-maker via the draft. If they are not entirely satisfied or if those in power believe some extra experience is needed to aid their failing defensive unit, placing a call to Wagner seems feasible.

This wouldn't be ideal for the Commanders. Watching Wagner sign for a bitter rival would no doubt sting, but the player is under no obligation to overlook any opportunity. He owes Washington nothing, so if he believes Dallas represents the best fit, the former Utah State star won't hesitate.

At the same time, it's also something the Commanders could exploit. They know Wagner remains a force in between the tackles. If offensive coordinator David Blough can conjure up ways to get the second-level enforcer isolated in space, that would be highly advantageous for Washington if the team goes up against him twice a season.

Wagner can still play. He just doesn't fit the Commanders' timeline anymore. The Cowboys might not either, but his previous connection to Schottenheimer could tempt him enough to tip the scales.

It'll be interesting to see where Wagner goes next. If that happens to be Dallas, he'll go from hero to villain in the blink of an eye.
