Brandon Aiyuk timeline puts Commanders in tough spot as risky decision looms

The financial aspect matters.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on the Brandon Aiyuk situation. Everyone also seems to believe he will end up with the Washington Commanders when his inevitable departure from the San Francisco 49ers is finally confirmed.

Just when that will be is up for debate. ESPN insider Adam Schefter didn't get the sense San Francisco was in any great rush to remove Aiyuk from the equation, despite this relationship fracturing past the point of no return. And now, one leading salary-cap analyst lent further weight to these claims.

Reports suggest that the Niners are waiting to see if a willing trade partner can be found. Some fans believe general manager John Lynch is being petty, refusing to give the player what he wants just for the sake of it. We'll probably never know what truly happened between both sides, but general manager Adam Peters will do his best to find out before making a potential move.

Mike Ginnitti of Spotrac didn't think this saga was anywhere close to being resolved. The cap guru thought holding onto Aiyuk until June made the most financial sense for San Francisco. They could cut him before then with a post-June 1 designation, but Lynch could easily stand pat and wait to see if he can get something back in return until then.

"One unresolved NFL offseason situation is the pending divorce of WR Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers. If SF believes they can secure even a late-round 2027 draft pick for the 28-year-old, hanging onto him into June makes better financial sense.

"A Post 6/1 trade splits their dead cap allocations at: 2026: $13.3M. 2027: $21.2M. It's a loss of $20M if they release or trade him before 6/1."

Aiyuk's contract is acquirable, and the Commanders have enough financial resources to take on the deal without jeopardizing any further short-term improvements. It might not cost anything more than a seventh-round pick to get a deal done, especially given Lynch has already stated that the 2020 first-round pick out of Arizona State has played his last game for the club.

The Commanders will do their due diligence before deciding on their next move. Quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is extremely close with the wideout, will vouch for Aiyuk. Peters knows the player well, and he had no trouble giving a fifth-round pick to San Francisco for Deebo Samuel Sr. amid concerns about his conditioning and character.

Doing the same with Aiyuk is even riskier. He didn't play at all last season, though rumors suggest he could have. Getting a chance in Washington — reuniting with his old college teammate — would bring renewed focus and purpose. What the Commanders must figure out is whether they want to speed up the process with a trade or bide their time for an eventual release.

Preference is probably for the latter, but nothing should be dismissed entirely.
