As the legal tampering window opens, the Washington Commanders remain strongly linked to a player who appears set to be released in the very near future. And one team insider fanned the flames even further about Brandon Aiyuk's potential arrival.

Aiyuk's relationship with the San Francisco 49ers has passed the point of no return. All contact was cut off during the 2025 campaign, and general manager John Lynch acknowledged he'd played his final snap for the NFC West club. They haven't cut the cord yet, but it's coming.

The wide receiver's close relationship with quarterback Jayden Daniels has sent the rumor mill spiraling. General manager Adam Peters also knows the player well and even praised him at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. It's not hard to connect the dots. But until his departure from San Francisco is confirmed, it's a waiting game.

Commanders insider fanned the flames around Brandon Aiyuk's potential arrival

John Keim of ESPN discussed Aiyuk during his recent podcast. The longstanding insider revealed that the wideout is working out and wants to play in 2026. The Commanders could also be willing to offer a one-year, incentivized deal in the $7-8 million range, which seems sensible in the circumstances.

Keim also hinted that Aiyuk wants to join the Commanders and would probably be on his best behavior to improve his chances of a longer-term commitment in 2027. Trading for him is not an option, but nobody around the league is going to give up draft capital to take on his contract.

If Aiyuk is keen on reuniting with Daniels as expected, and everything checks out on the health front, this almost becomes a foregone conclusion. The former Arizona State star has missed a lot of football in recent years, but Washington wouldn't be paying much to find out if he can get back to his old form. If it doesn't work out, at least they tried for Daniels.

Aiyuk's arrival won't preclude the Commanders from adding another dynamic wide receiver, either in free agency or the draft. Prioritizing defense is almost guaranteed, but it cannot come at the expense of adding more firepower around Daniels and improving his protection.

It's a fine line for Peters, and the margin for error has completely evaporated after a five-win campaign in 2025. Aiyuk is a high-risk pickup if the Niners eventually part ways, but the rewards could be substantial if he stays injury-free and remains firmly focused.

Daniels has already vouched for his good friend. Peters likes him as a person. Once the Niners cut him loose, Washington will likely make its move.

After all, where there's smoke, there's typically fire.
