Sweating out a narrow victory at the New Orleans Saints kept the Washington Commanders in pole position to make the postseason as the seventh seed. However, head coach Dan Quinn will be aware that things must improve to get over the line.
The Commanders have a tricky test this weekend when the red-hot Philadelphia Eagles come to town. They can win the NFC East with a victory at Northwest Stadium. They are also on a 10-game winning run and have disposed of Washington once already this season.
Washington is navigating some difficult injury problems to further raise concern. Jonathan Allen's 21-day practice window has been opened, but his return probably won't arrive this weekend. Those who are involved must display the correct resolve and fight with everything they have to make their playoff dreams a reality.
This is a high-pressure situation not many holdovers from the previous regime have experienced before. Thankfully, there aren't many of them, so hopes are high that this group can dig deep in the face of stern opposition to all but guarantee their place in the knockout rounds.
With this in mind, here are five Commanders players on the hot seat entering Week 16 against the Eagles. We'll start with imposing linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Commanders players on the hot seat entering Week 16 vs. Eagles
Bobby Wagner - Commanders LB
The Washington Commanders will be expecting a big performance from Bobby Wagner in this one. His experience, proven production, and ability to communicate effectively will be needed in plentiful supply versus the Philadelphia Eagles' high-octane offense.
Wagner's been a revelation on and off the field this season. Signing him was a big statement of intent from the franchise. His tone-setting mindset and inspiring leadership played a leading role in the immensely positive culture shift across the organization. He's been in these scenarios before, which is another major boost that shouldn't go unnoticed.
The former second-round pick needs to be around Saquon Barkley early and often. Washington did a good job of containing the running back until late in their first meeting. Wagner's role will be integral in doing the same again in the face of a legitimate NFL MVP candidate.
