The Washington Commanders had the most pending free agents anywhere in the league entering the offseason. Some have already been re-signed to bolster depth and retain some semblance of continuity. However, not everyone will get a reprieve after a five-win campaign that brought far more questions than answers.
One veteran who is expected to take his chances elsewhere is Austin Ekeler. The running back tore his Achilles tendon in Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers and wasn't seen again. Even so, the dual-threat weapon sent an unmistakable signal to other NFL teams about his progress shortly before the legal tampering window opens.
Ekeler posted a workout video on Instagram, suggesting his rehabilitation is going much better than expected. This is a serious injury to recover from, especially at this relatively late stage of his playing career. At the same time, his exceptional work ethic and undeniable desire to resume his playing career are helping him stay focused and ready for the next opportunity that comes along.
Austin Ekeler injury progress won't change much for the Commanders
That is unlikely to change anything for the Commanders.

They have faith in Jacory Croskey-Merritt after the seventh-round pick proved to be an absolute steal. Offensive coordinator David Blough acknowledged that more is needed, and Washington is being strongly linked to top-end free agents such as Travis Etienne Jr. and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to address this issue.
This will leave Ekeler surplus to requirements. But if this social media post is any indication, the Achilles is getting stronger, and he could be in line to resume football activities much sooner than expected.
Ekeler's days as a primary backfield option are seemingly gone. He was a complementary piece during his first season in Washington, but looked set for an expanded role in 2025 before a devastating blow. That's only made him hungrier, so it would be surprising if another franchise didn't take the plunge with a one-year deal at some stage.
Timing is everything. Ekeler knew how good this video would make him look, and putting it out just before the free-agent chaos begins around the league sent a strong message about his intentions. He might have to wait a little longer than other running backs to get signed, but another chance will come somewhere.
Things may have been different for Ekeler and the Commanders this offseason if he hadn't gotten hurt. There is nothing anyone can do about that, but the Western Colorado product is striving to ensure this isn't the end of his professional journey.
Whether this will trigger any immediate action is another matter.
