The Washington Commanders are in a precarious situation heading into the 2026 trade deadline. General manager Adam Peters is taking and making calls, but his strategy may depend on how the team performs in its two contests after the bye.
If the Commanders don't win both, Peters may decide to sell off some assets to improve their chances of sustainable long-term growth. Whether any established veterans would have a market is debatable, but the front-office leader has to try.
Wide receiver Terry McLaurin is no longer viable after suffering a season-ending torn patellar tendon. Pro Bowl defensive lineman Daron Payne could be another, but Washington may keep him.
Commanders trading Andrew Wylie would be a base hit for Adam Peters
Unless the Commanders can find a willing suitor for underperforming players like Quan Martin and Mike Sainristil, it will be hard to extract solid value.
ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell touted an overlooked name who could draw interest from elsewhere. Versatile offensive lineman Andrew Wylie was the choice, and he put together a trade package that would send the Super Bowl winner to the New England Patriots for a Day 3 pick swap.
"With multiple sixth-round picks, the Patriots can afford to ship one off to add a veteran. And the Commanders could turn to practice-squaders Trent Scott or Esa Pole, who filled in for the Chiefs at left tackle last season, as their swing tackle after (Andrew) Wylie's departure."
The Commanders don't have much quality along their offensive line. Head coach Dan Quinn isn't happy, but Peters didn't give off the impression that there would be any changes.
Wylie has been firmly on the fringes this season. He's a versatile backup who got a new two-year extension this offseason, but there was no chance of starting again.
Instead, Wylie is the primary backup and can play almost anywhere on the protection. Though he struggles on the edge on an island and lacks the mobility to succeed on the interior, the Commanders trust him.
Commanders' actions before the trade deadline will tell fans all they need to know
And in all honesty, they don't have much else.
As Barnwell stated, the Commanders could call up either Trent Scott or Esa Pole if interest arrives in Wylie. Both are serviceable, and there probably isn't much of a drop-off. And if Peters can swap his seventh-rounder for a sixth, that's worth considering.
But Peters might just decide to stand pat. That has merit, especially if the Commanders come off their bye week with a win or two. If not, there is no alternative but to recoup and restock.
Wylie is expendable if another team needs some extra depth or a short-term stopgap. This would also get his $4.3 million cap hit off the books next season, which is a win-win.
Obviously, this is just a projection. Wylie hasn't done much over the last three seasons to suggest he could go elsewhere and make a difference. But if the Commanders get the chance, they should consider moving him.
Decision time is approaching. But even as speculation builds, fans shouldn't be surprised if Peters does absolutely nothing.
However, this will only delay the seemingly inevitable landmark changes in 2027.
