Kliff Kingsbury could be a hot commodity when the 2025 head coaching cycle officially begins. The Washington Commanders offensive coordinator highlighted his desire to get a top job again at some stage. Whether that's after one season with the team hasn't been determined.
The Commanders are bracing themselves for inquiries. Kingsbury's improved his reputation after being fired by the Arizona Cardinals. His efficient offense and ability to get the best out of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels haven't gone unnoticed by others around the league.
Speculation continues to grow around Kingsbury. The Chicago Bears are reportedly keen and quarterback Caleb Williams threw support behind the possibility last week. Another team is also considering the prospect of approaching the coveted play-caller.
Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury drawing reported interest from the Jets
NFL insider Josina Anderson revealed that the New York Jets have internally discussed Kingsbury's credentials in greater detail. Arthur Smith was another name mentioned as the AFC East outfit casts its net far and wide for a permanent successor to Robert Saleh.
"I'm told the Jets have internally discussed interest in interviewing Steelers OC Arthur Smith and Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury for the head coach vacancy, per sources. Scheduling an actual interview is always a mutual decision, so we'll see what occurs in this situation. Sources around the league have been talking about the perception of factors surrounding the Jets opening both positive, and not so positive."Josina Anderson
The Jets emerged as the poster child for dysfunction in 2024. Many analysts expected them to mount a deep postseason run with quarterback Aaron Rodgers returning and the abundance of quality young players across the board. Things capitulated rapidly and Saleh paid with his job.
The likes of Rex Ryan, Mike Vrabel, and former Commanders head coach Ron Rivera have or will interview for the Jets vacancy. Kingsbury could also be in line if he feels like this is a project worth taking on.
That's the big question. Kingsbury is happy in his current role and credits the Commanders for giving him a shot to rediscover his love for coaching. This also allows him to be selective throughout the process rather than chasing the first opportunity that comes along.
Losing Kingsbury would be a devastating blow. The last thing Washington needs is an upheaval for Daniels after his exceptional rookie campaign. Having to learn a new playbook and develop a relationship with another play-caller isn't ideal, but it's a genuine possibility.
Quinn will know that Kingsbury's time in Washington might be short-lived. If not this offseason then probably next if the same trend continues. The importance of identifying potential replacements and striking quickly to secure their preferred target cannot be overstated.
It would be a surprise if Kingsbury considered the Jets. They are dealing with some severe issues behind the scenes. Owner Woody Johnson is being painted in a terrible light, which could make head coaching candidates think twice about making a commitment if presented with an offer.
Kingsbury's immediate focus is helping the Commanders make their presence felt in the playoffs. Something that will only raise interest in his capabilities further.
Until then, it's a waiting game.
