Former Commanders' head coach Ron Rivera gets jump start on 2025 hiring cycle

Ron Rivera has his first interview.

Ron Rivera's spent the last year working in the media since being fired by the Washington Commanders. The head coach had no real complaints given how things unfolded over his four-season tenure. That didn't stop him from boldly claiming the culture he'd built was something that could benefit the franchise long-term.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

Rivera's failed personnel moves weren't looked at favorably by general manager Adam Peters. His successor, Dan Quinn, injected new life into the locker room where once there was nothing abject misery.

Want further proof? The Commanders are 11-5 with one game remaining and booked their playoff spot with a dramatic overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Rivera can only look on with a sense of envy of what might have been. It wasn't easy working for previous owner Dan Snyder, but it's not prevented the former linebacker from wanting another shot at a top job somewhere else if the right opportunity comes along.

The fact genuine culture builders such as Quinn and Dan Campbell are having success suggests there could be a market for Rivera to get some interviews. Whether it's enough to become a head coach again is another matter.

Ron Rivera is set to interview with the Jets after Commanders' failings

Being out of work gives Rivera a jump start on the head coaching cycle. Speculation remains about the Chicago Bears being interested. The New York Jets provided some concrete clarity by reportedly placing the ex-Washington coach on their shortlist of early candidates.

According to multiple reports, Rivera will interview with the Jets. They are looking for a new head coach after firing Robert Saleh in-season. That brought almost no improvements whatsoever as dysfunction reigns supreme until someone capable of providing stability is appointed.

The Jets have talent. There are chemistry issues and quarterback Aaron Rodgers' presence is starting to create friction with the likes of wide receiver Garrett Wilson. It needs a firm hand to steady the ship. That's probably why they want to examine Rivera's credentials in greater detail.

Rex Ryan, who's been Jets head coach previously, also confirmed that he's going to speak with those in power. That would be a bombshell of epic proportions, but nothing can be completely dismissed where the AFC East outfit is concerned.

This might be for due diligence purposes if nothing else. The Jets should cast their net far and wide for the right hire. With Mike Vrabel available and other candidates unable to be interviewed given their current employment around the league, Rivera being strongly considered is far from a done deal.

It's a slight window of opportunity for Rivera but nothing more. Judging by his performance in Washington and how things have improved in Year 1 under Quinn's guidance, convincing another franchise he's up to the task is a tough sell.

We wait with bated breath to see what comes next for Rivera.
