Jaylin Lane - Commanders WR
There remains intense speculation about the Washington Commanders' plans at the wide receiver position. Brandon Aiyuk is desperate to join, even if he's still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Stefon Diggs is also keen on a homecoming, but general manager Adam Peters has not done anything about it as yet.
It's a risk, but there is more confidence in the building about the current state of affairs at wideout. Terry McLaurin may be the only one with legitimate consistency over an extended period. Even so, several young upstarts have already made strong claims for increased responsibilities when the 2026 campaign begins.
Jaylin Lane's roster spot isn't under any immediate threat. His emergence as an explosive force in the return game is a solid platform from which to build. But if he wants to carve out a better role for himself on the offensive rotation, minicamp must be his springboard.
Kain Medrano - Commanders LB
Washington needed a rethink within its linebacker room this offseason. Last season did not go well, and even though Bobby Wagner's influence off the field remained a massive plus in times of struggle, his on-field powers were waning enough to warrant going in a different direction.
Things look a lot more prosperous now. Leo Chenal was signed in free agency. The Commanders spent the No. 7 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Sonny Styles. Frankie Luvu is switching back to his off-ball role, and Jordan Magee still has some untapped potential entering Year 3.
That reduces the margin of error for others looking to make the roster. There might be one or two spots left, which exponentially increases the urgency for Kain Medrano.
Medrano has all the athleticism required, but he is incredibly raw. After being used sparingly as a rookie, the UCLA product has to catch the eye with the progress he makes this summer.
Jeremy McNichols - Commanders RB
The Commanders have strength in numbers at the running back position entering the 2026 campaign. While new offensive coordinator David Blough is expected to use a committee approach, the battle for top dog will be something fans will monitor in the weeks and months ahead.
Running backs coach Anthony Lynn acknowledged that it's hard to gauge who's got the upper hand right now. Second-year pro Jacory Croskey-Merritt will play a role. Free-agent signings Rachaad White and Jerome Ford both gained plaudits at OTAs. Sixth-round rookie Kaytron Allen is also working hard to establish himself in pursuit of immediate involvement.
Just where that leaves Jeremy McNichols is anyone's guess. The veteran got another one-year deal this offseason, and he's a respected force on special teams. However, he'll have to stand out considerably at minicamp and beyond to improve his chances of making the squad.
