Players only get one chance to make a good first impression when training camp begins. The Washington Commanders have raised the urgency with another roster overhaul from general manager Adam Peters, and the added competition for spots has brought a positive response from everyone so far.
Training camp is still in its infancy, but some have wasted no time in making an impact.
There is real intent across the board. Turning the tide is crucial this season, and head coach Dan Quinn has challenged his squad by raising the tempo in practices and making sure last year's failures will not be tolerated moving forward.
There will be plenty of twists and turns to come. It's not perfect yet, and there are still some problem areas that could potentially hold Washington back. But if the roster as presently constructed keeps coming together and gets a better run of luck on the injury side of things, it's hard to envisage the Commanders not being more competitive in 2026.
Camp will lay the foundations. It also separates the contributors from the also-rans. And even though there is still a long way to go before final cuts are due, some are managing to stand out more than others.

K'Lavon Chaisson - Commanders OLB
While there has been more hype around big-money signing Odafe Oweh, and with good reason, fellow free-agent acquisition K'Lavon Chaisson also wasted no time in making his presence felt upon joining the club.
That trend is continuing at training camp.
Chaisson is reportedly starting opposite Oweh in Daronte Jones' 3-4 defensive front. That could change when Dorance Armstrong Jr. gets the all-clear to resume football activities after tearing his ACL last season, but the LSU product promises to be an important part of the team's new scheme regardless.
It's an opportunity Chaisson isn't planning to waste.
He bet on himself this offseason, turning down more long-term security with the New Orleans Saints to join the Commanders. Chaisson believes last season's breakout, which helped the New England Patriots reach the Super Bowl, was just the start. Initial indications suggest the edge rusher is more than capable of achieving this objective.
The Commanders haven't had this sort of strength in depth on the defensive edge for years. Jones has endless options capable of wreaking havoc within his system, and if Chaisson continues to impress right through the 2026 campaign, a much bigger payday will await next year.
