Jeffrey M'ba - Commanders DL
The Washington Commanders' defensive front is a man down after Johnny Newton suffered a torn pectoral that will land him on the injured reserve. It's an unfortunate development for the breakout hopeful, but it's next man up to ensure no momentum is lost.
Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and free-agent signing Tim Settle Jr. are projected to start on Daronte Jones' 3-4 defensive front. They should be productive if everyone is healthy, but Washington's depth behind them may be an issue.
Adam Peters and Dan Quinn have some big decisions to make. Charles Omenihu looks set for a key rotational role, but with Deatrich Wise Jr. likely unable to start the campaign, more will be required. And even though undrafted rookie Jeffrey M'ba has done well overall, it doesn't look like he's done enough.
M'ba does have some impressive physical gifts. If he makes it through the waiver process, bringing him back onto the practice squad seems feasible.
Ale Kaho - Commanders LB
Adam Peters has some problems to figure out lower down the linebacker depth chart. Sonny Styles, Frankie Luvu, and free-agent signing Leo Chenal will obviously make it, but how many more the Commanders need is up for debate.
If Jordan Magee is healthy, he stands a good chance. And even though the former Temple star wasn't healthy enough to participate, his roster hopes improved without playing a snap.
This largely stems from others' underperformance. Kain Medrano flopped with more involvement, and he could be waived. Ale Kaho was another who failed to seize the moment, so he might have to settle for a place on the practice squad after making the roster in 2025.
Kaho has some nice instinctiveness and explosiveness, but he remains a work in progress. He could go through as a special-teams option, but the Commanders have enough strength at the top end to stash him on the practice squad.
Jacoby Jones - Commanders WR
The Commanders have a surplus in their wide receiver room. Clues emerged during their preseason finale against the Ravens regarding who's in or out, but it'll still be an anxious wait for some before their fate is finally determined.
From the outside looking in, it seems as if Jacoby Jones could be among the odd men out.
The second-year player has flashed promise once again this offseason. Still, with so many other strong candidates vying for roster spots, it's difficult to find room for the physically imposing pass-catcher out of Central Florida.
The practice squad is probably the best Jones can hope for if another team doesn't claim him off the waiver wire.
He's got the potential to develop into something more over time, and another year with the Commanders should bring about further growth. And if Jones' number is called, he can be impactful when opportunities come his way.
