Commanders could acquire Brandon Aiyuk
Of all the former Adam Peters connections he could turn to this offseason, none have generated more speculation than Brandon Auyuk. The wide receiver's time with the San Francisco 49ers is over after relationships soured, with all signs pointing to his release at some point during the offseason.
The Niners could make this extremely difficult for Aiyuk. At the same time, they're probably frustrated enough to just dispose of the wideout with little fanfare attached. When that inevitable scenario becomes reality, the Commanders could be at the top of their preferred destinations.
Aiyuk and quarterback Jayden Daniels are close friends. They developed a strong bond during their time together at Arizona State, so the chemistry is already there. Even so, there are some serious red flags for Peters to investigate before this becomes more realistic.
Peters will need to know what really went down with the Niners. Aiyuk also missed all of last season through injury, so there is just no telling if he can ever get back to his old self. Daniels will likely push hard for the move, but that shouldn't be enough.
If Aiyuk is willing to accept an incentivized, prove-it deal, the Commanders might take the plunge. Anything less, and Peters should seek alternatives.
Commanders could sign Ben Bartch
No team should ever settle on its offensive line. The Commanders received outstanding returns from the unit last season, and they coped relatively well when changes were made or enforced. That didn't stop offensive line coach Bobby Johnson from being fired, which means different blocking concepts could be installed under new play-caller David Blough.
Several experienced linemen are also set to hit free agency, and not everyone will return. Adam Peters was in the San Francisco 49ers' front office when they signed Ben Bartch in 2023. He's been a backup almost ever since, but the flashes he displayed in limited involvement last season leave reasons for encouragement.
Bartch is best suited for the left guard position. The Commanders started Chris Paul there last season. He seizedhis final chance to carve out a role for himself. This couldn't have come at a better time, and the player should get paid handsomely on a new deal in free agency.
Whether that's in Washington or elsewhere remains to be seen. Peters should make him an offer, and even if he re-signs, Bartch could be a useful backup option. Especially considering Super Bowl winner Nick Allegretti as a potential salary-cap cut candidate.
