Commanders could sign Eric Wilson
As previously mentioned, the Washington Commanders could use some extra depth at the linebacker position. Bobby Wagner became a tremendous asset to the club over his two years in D.C. Still, this looks like a good time for both parties to go their separate ways.
Even if Jones moves forward with Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee as his starting tandem, bolstering the backup options is almost guaranteed. Eric Wilson knows what Jones' demands will be and the scheme he'll no doubt run. With 6.5 sacks and 115 tackles for the Minnesota Vikings this season, there are far worse avenues the Commanders could go down.
Wilson also holds his own in coverage, giving up an 83.2 passer rating when targeted in 2025. This wouldn't be a jaw-dropping signing by any stretch, but his production, leadership, and communication skills make him an enticing option if the price is right.
Commanders could sign Nahshon Wright
Just when all hope was fading with Nahshon Wright, the formidable defensive back finally started to put everything together with the Chicago Bears in 2025. He's also earned himself a ton of money on the free-agent market along the way.
Wright secured five interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and 80 tackles as the Bears won the NFC North. He also spent time working alongside Daronte Jones on the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. Whether that holds much weight is anyone's guess, but this looks like the sort of physically imposing player the Commanders may need to enhance what could be a new-look secondary.
Getting called up to the Pro Bowl is only going to add more dollars to Wright's demands. This ascension could be the start of great things. However, he might also be a one-season wonder, especially considering how little he's achieved in the years prior.
Jones' previous knowledge of the player will tell the Commanders all they need to know.
Commanders could sign D.J. Wonnum
It's no secret that the Commanders are desperately seeking improved edge-rushing options moving forward. Adam Peters neglected this critical position group last offseason, and the team paid heavily. The general manager has already stated that this will not be the case in 2026.
Adding a blue-chip prospect in the first round must be considered. Even that won't be enough, so expect the Commanders to add one or two productive pieces in free agency to give Daronte Jones' chances a shot in the arm.
D.J. Wonnum worked with Jones in Minnesota. He's spent the last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, overcoming a serious medical condition in his first season to be a focal point in 2025. His sack numbers weren't up to par, but defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero asked him to do a lot of the dirty work that didn't show up on the stat sheet, and he did it well.
Wonnum is a free agent, and the Panthers may not have the financial resources to make him an enticing offer.
