The Washington Commanders wouldn't have gotten to the NFC Championship game in 2024 without veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner. But the cracks began to show this time around.

Wagner was still a force in between the tackles, but opposing teams actively targeted him as a weak link in isolation with great success. With wholesale changes expected once again this offseason, it may be a good time for both parties to go their separate ways.

While there is a chance Wagner calls time on his glittering professional career, he could decide on another year. That shouldn't be with the Commanders, who need to get younger and more explosive all over their defense.

Bobby Wagner linked to the Bills as Commanders contract winds down

Mason Cameron from Pro Football Focus thought Wagner's market could be more interesting than people think when free agency begins. And if the second-level enforcer decides on another swansong, the analyst believes that the Buffalo Bills could be an intriguing landing spot.

"[Bobby] Wagner is another high-performing veteran whose market is worth watching. Although Wagner, at nearly 36 years old, isn’t near the player in coverage he once was, he still excels as a run defender and a blitzer. The Bills struggled to fit the run in 2025, ranking 28th in rushing success rate (33.1%) allowed. Their linebacking corps was a contributing factor, as the group's 27.3% negatively graded run-play rate ranked 30th. With Matt Milano‘s and Shaq Thompson’s contracts set to expire, finding a savvy veteran to overhaul the group would be wise."

The Bills have a lot to figure out before then. They are on the lookout for a new head coach after firing Sean McDermott following their playoff exit. General manager Brandon Beane received a contentious promotion, but he still needs to find the right hire. After that, it's about finding the correct reinforcements to mount another Super Bowl challenge.

Wagner would provide leadership and a calming influence. He can still be effective if utilized correctly. The Bills also have Matt Milano on the books, which would be a nice security blanket for the former Utah State standout at this extremely late stage of his NFL journey.

The Commanders must move Frankie Luvu back to an off-ball role after having to put him on the edge this season. Jordan Magee's flashes when given defensive reps should be enough for extended involvement next time around. And there is no doubt that Peters will be looking to add through free agency or the draft.

That means Wagner is likely done in Washington. He gave everything to the cause, but it seems this relationship will end this spring.
