Daronte Jones - Commanders DC
As previously mentioned, head coach Dan Quinn had to take drastic action this offseason. The Washington Commanders couldn't stand pat and hope for improvements. Parting ways with both coordinators was a major statement that low standards will no longer be tolerated.
We've already discussed David Blough, but new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones' influence could be even more important. He's bringing more aggression, creativity, and physicality to his unit. There is an emphasis on versatility, and his presence is receiving a positive response so far.
Players have been highly complimentary of Jones' influence through Washington's early offseason program. The urgency, intent, and focus are all right where they need to be. Everyone is fully aware of their responsibilities, and there is a freedom to be instinctive. Fans should expect to see this defense flying all over the field. General manager Adam Peters also did his part by prioritizing defensive reinforcements in free agency and the draft.
Jones is ambitious. He's highly regarded around the league and has worked under some impressive defensive minds over his career. The bar isn't exactly high for improvements, but it's starting to look like the Commanders' defense could be a real surprise package with a strong start to the campaign.
Chig Okonkwo - Commanders TE
Zach Ertz was a prominent feature for the Commanders throughout his two years with the club. The veteran tight end provided quarterback Jayden Daniels with an assured pass-catching presence. While the aging player wasn't explosive after the catch, he still knows how to get open in the short-to-intermediate areas of the field.
Ertz is no longer around. Another deal didn't seem likely even before he tore his ACL against the Minnesota Vikings. The relationship has run its course, but the Commanders had something else up their sleeve.
Adam Peters wasn't going to wait around in free agency. The Commanders identified Chig Okonkwo as a high-priority target and secured his services with a three-year, $27 million deal. Looking at the positive impression he'd left on Washington's offseason program, he looks more than capable of completely changing the dynamic.
Coaches and teammates have been blown away by Okonkwo's unique blend of size, speed, and physicality. There are questions around the wide receivers behind Terry McLaurin on the depth chart, so the former Maryland standout could potentially become the No. 2 option in the passing game.
It's a lofty but attainable goal. Daniels lost a trusted ally in Ertz, but he gained one for the long term in Okonkwo.
