The Washington Commanders had some concerns emerge from their ninth training camp practice, which was the eighth with fans and media in attendance. For the first time, they centered on a couple of injury scares.
Five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil will undergo tests after getting a knock on his neck during a drill against edge rusher Odafe Oweh. There doesn't appear to be much panic, but Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network stated he wouldn't be surprised if he misses time.
It turned out to be much worse. Reports now confirmed Tunsil suffered a torn tricep. He will likely need surgery and is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2026 campaign. Just a devastating blow for a team that endured some extremely rough luck on the injury front last season.

Then, cornerback Trey Amos also left practice early. This was only his second session back after a long-term absence, but it may have been a precautionary measure more than anything else.
Or so we hope.
Injuries like this are commonplace around the league at camp. It's an unfortunate part of the business, but the Commanders have avoided any major issues so far. And on the field, the defense reportedly got the upper hand.
Daronte Jones' unit is fast, physical, and is leaving a mark. They are challenging the offense, and David Blough's group is responding positively. It's a small detail, but it could matter much more when the 2026 campaign begins.
That's for the future. For now, here are six standouts from Day 9 of Commanders training camp in Ashburn.
Supreme standouts from Day 9 of Washington Commanders 2026 training camp
Stefon Diggs - Commanders WR
There was more work for wide receiver Stefon Diggs during his second practice since joining the Commanders on a one-year deal that could be worth up to $12 million. And it was another impressive day at the office for the four-time Pro Bowler.
According to those in attendance, Diggs came alive during the 11-on-11 portion of practice. He made several outstanding catches throughout the day, showcasing his dependability and looking much further ahead than some envisaged after missing the entire offseason.
Stefon Diggs has made a ton of plays in 11 on 11s today.

Diggs joined the Commanders because he believes something special is brewing. He wants to be the missing piece of the puzzle, and this is the best receiver partner Terry McLaurin has ever had. The chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels is already growing, and it's only going to get better from here.

Leo Chenal - Commanders LB
As previously mentioned, the defense had the better of proceedings on Day 9. The Commanders are younger, hungrier, and more dynamic on this side of the football after a busy offseason from general manager Adam Peters. And linebacker Leo Chenal is the embodiment of this seismic shift.
Chenal signed a decent deal with the Commanders after spending the first four years of his career on the Kansas City Chiefs. His athleticism is absolutely off the charts, and he anticipates things extremely well. This was especially evident throughout the practice, with Washington's free-agent acquisition flying all over the field to make some eye-catching run stops.
It would be a big surprise if Chenal didn't take his game to new heights in Washington. Getting it done in the regular season is all that matters, but he's setting himself up well to achieve this objective.
