Chig Okonkwo - Commanders TE

There is an enormous sense of intrigue around tight end Chig Okonkwo's arrival at the Washington Commanders. There are those who believe he could be a breakout candidate in this system, but others are underestimating just how pivotal this signing could be.

The Commanders got solid production from Zach Ertz during his two seasons in Washington. He was a dependable option over the middle who could make a difference in the red zone. What the Pro Bowler didn't have was explosiveness and the ability to create after the catch. Okonkwo has those traits in abundance.

While Okonkwo has never surpassed 600 receiving yards in his career, the situation with the Tennessee Titans wasn't exactly the best platform for him to excel. The Commanders have a franchise quarterback and a scheme that effectively maximizes his skill set. With questions surrounding those behind Terry McLaurin in the receiver room, the former Maryland standout could easily become the No. 2 option in the passing game.

That would be a dream come true for the Commanders. And based on Jayden Daniels' recent comments, there is excitement about what Okonkwo brings to the table.

Commanders defensive front

Daronte Jones is the man tasked with reviving the Washington Commanders' defense next season. Joe Whitt Jr. was inevitably fired after the campaign, and the first-time NFL play-caller comes highly recommended after a glittering coaching career so far.

General manager Adam Peters gave Jones everything he needed throughout free agency and the draft. But if this gamble on his blossoming credentials is going to pay off, it must start in the defensive trenches.

Most experts believe Jones will switch the Commanders into a 3-4 base front. He's spent the last few years working under Brian Flores with the Minnesota Vikings, which could make his scheme aggressive and versatile. And those on the front must set the tone more effectively than they did when Whitt called the shots.

Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw are expected to be the 3-4 defensive end tandem. Both underperformed last season, but the lack of capable edge rushers did them no favors. There are no such excuses now.

The urgency is high for both, with their respective futures beyond 2026 hanging in the balance. Johnny Newton is also looking for an expanded role, which adds some extra spice to the dynamic.

The Commanders also brought Tim Settle Jr. back for a second spell in Washington. He's a space-eater with proven production at the nose tackle position. While this goes largely unnoticed in the grand scheme of things, it'll be integral to any success that comes Washington's way.
