Just when things couldn't get worse for the Washington Commanders in Week 2, prolific right guard Sam Cosmi took a hard head hit from rookie running back Kaytron Allen in friendly fire. It was an unfortunate accident, but it put the 2021 second-round pick in the NFL's concussion protocol.
Cosmi hasn't practiced this week, and all signs point to him being ruled out when the final injury designations are announced. This means more movement around the offensive line, which is far from ideal with Marcus Mariota coming in to start at quarterback.
Clues have formed at practice this week. Reporters noted that Nick Allegretti is working at right guard, with recent arrival Lucas Patrick getting the first-team reps at center.
Patrick signed after Week 1, so this represents a crash course in the blocking concepts. The Commanders don't have much of a choice but to throw him into the fire if Cosmi cannot go, especially with sixth-round rookie Matt Gulbin taking time to develop into a competent performer.
While Patrick has some decent previous production to call upon, he missed a lot of time with injuries last year. He put together a full summer with the New York Giants but didn't do enough to make their 53-man roster. Now, he could get his chance to make the offensive line anchor position his own this weekend.
Fabian Moreau - Commanders CB
This has nothing to do with injuries, though 2025 second-round selection Trey Amos is still two weeks away from a potential return designation. It has everything to do with Mike Sainristil's poor performance.
The Commanders are losing faith in Sainristil. After being publicly challenged following his inept performance against the Philadelphia Eagles, the same trend continued against the Dallas Cowboys. Sainristil looked lost, was picked on by quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and frustration is clearly building.
Sainristil may have reached a tipping point.
Putting him against someone like Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a nightmare scenario for Washington. He's struggling to find any sort of confidence, and even though options are relatively thin, it wouldn't be surprising to see his snaps reduced considerably at Northwest Stadium.
In this scenario, Fabian Moreau might benefit most.
Moreau worked under Daronte Jones last year during their time together on the Minnesota Vikings. He's played for Washington before and was drafted by the club in 2017. He might be a little slower these days, but he knows the system and knows how to operate effectively within it.
At a time when stability is desperately needed, Moreau might be preferred over Sainristil. And the Michigan product can have no complaints whatsoever if this scenario becomes reality.
