Commanders' starting kicker
The Washington Commanders are holding a genuine kicking competition that head coach Dan Quinn said would run right through the summer. Based on the early reports at OTAs, it is simply too close to call right now.
Jake Moody joined the franchise last season after the Commanders' costly experiment with Matt Gay fell flat. He performed relatively well in difficult circumstances, but it wasn't enough to get a free run to the starting role once again.
Washington was eager to bring in some competition. Drew Stevens was invited to the Commanders' rookie minicamp for a tryout initially. But when interest from elsewhere emerged, general manager Adam Peters changed it to an undrafted rookie contract.
Stevens has a booming leg, which has already been showcased at OTAs. His presence has also brought out more from Moody, who made it clear through his performance that he will not give up his spot without a fight.
This will be a fascinating dynamic to monitor at Washington's mandatory minicamp, training camp, and the preseason. Moody should still be considered the favorite right now, due to his experience in a regular-season setting. However, the rookie is looking to push him at every step to secure the job.
Commanders WR dynamic
One doesn't have to look far around the media to see speculation around the Washington Commanders and another potential addition to the wide receiver room. Nothing has materialized as yet, which indicates Adam Peters' willingness to give the young guys a chance before deciding on further action.
Brandon Aiyuk is the hot name, but he's not doing himself any favors right now. Stefon Diggs highlighted his intrigue regarding a homecoming, but the Commanders have not reciprocated this interest as yet. That might change, but Peters could just as easily go through with what he has.
The Commanders only have one wideout with legitimate consistency. That's two-time Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin, but the signs from OTAs leave hope that others lower down the depth chart can raise their contributions within David Blough's schematic concepts.
Dyami Brown, Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks, and Jaylin Lane all caught the eye at various stages. The buzz is also soaring around third-round rookie Antonio Williams, who has the sharpness in his routes and the yards after catch ability Washington lost when Deebo Samuel Sr. wasn't brought back.
How this battle for supremacy shakes out over the summer will be crucial. The Commanders have cash to spend if more is needed. But for now, all signs are pointing up.
