Brandon Coleman - Commanders OT
The Washington Commanders were dealt some torrid news with the loss of five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a torn triceps that will now need surgery. He's expected to miss a large part of this season, and head coach Dan Quinn is placing all his faith in Brandon Coleman to fill the void.
All eyes were on Coleman to see how he fared right out of the gate. Though this is a controlled environment even in pads, there was a lot to like about the way he went about his business.
The Commanders threw Coleman into the fire in 1-on-1 drills against big-money edge rusher Odafe Oweh, and he more than held his own. There were some flashes on running downs, either pulling or carving up lanes for some decent gains. There was nothing especially dominant about his production, but he didn't make any major mistakes either.

Is Coleman going to bring the same elite production as Tunsil? Probably not, but the Commanders have won with him on the blindside before.
Coleman was the starting left tackle as a rookie when Washington surged to the NFC Championship game. He isn't as accomplished as Tunsil, but that doesn't mean he cannot be serviceable. That's all the Commanders need until their main man is ready to return.
Frankie Luvu - Commanders LB
All the hype has centered on free-agent signing Leo Chenal and No. 7 pick Sonny Styles in Washington's linebacker room. However, new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones also has Frankie Luvu to lean on.
Luvu looks faster and more explosive this summer. The Commanders were forced to give him more time on the edge last season amid their injury crisis, and he got lost in the shuffle. Jones is now moving him back to his off-ball role, and it's clear his influence is growing exponentially.
The former Washington State standout was flying all over the field on Day 10 of training camp. Luvu is leading from the front, and others are willingly following him. He looks comfortable in the system, which allows him to focus on what he does best: being aggressive and instinctive to get around the football consistently.

This is a big year for Luvu, the last of his deal. The Commanders haven't offered him an extension ahead of time, and the presence of Chenal and Styles might see him become surplus to requirements next spring. That's to be determined, but the 2024 second-team All-Pro is a key cog in Washington's defensive machine this season.
And if Luvu performs well enough, potentially with the green dot, the Commanders would be wise to keep him around.
