Commanders could trade for Greg Newsome II

  • Chances: Intriguing

The Washington Commanders' secondary was exposed in no uncertain terms by the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6. Jayden Daniels and the offense did everything they could to keep things competitive, but they were fighting a losing battle. If those in power genuinely believe there's a chance to make the postseason and potentially get a home-field advantage, they need to react accordingly.

Washington is further ahead than the brightest optimist envisaged. There are still weak links that could hold them back against the better teams around the league. Adding another cornerback with proven production would go a long way to improving matters. That puts someone like Greg Newsome II firmly under the microscope in this scenario.

Newsome is one of the league's most productive nickel cornerbacks. The Commanders have been playing second-round rookie Mike Sainristil more on the outside than in the slot. If this is something the coaching staff plans to adopt long-term, placing a call into the Cleveland Browns to inquire about the former first-round pick out of Northwestern wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.

The defensive back is still performing at a decent level this season, giving up just 56 percent of targets thrown in his direction and an 82.1 passer rating when targeted. This would be a tremendous addition for the Commanders if the price is right.

Commanders could trade for Za'Darius Smith

  • Chances: Unlikely

The Washington Commanders are anxiously awaiting news on Dorance Armstrong Jr.'s prognosis after the promising edge rusher went out of their Week 6 loss at the Baltimore Ravens with a rib injury. If he's forced to miss extended time, general manager Adam Peters needs to form a contingency plan.

Washington has the salary-cap space and draft picks to make a move or two should they wish. Much will depend on where those in power believe this team can go in the short-term, but the current state of the NFC East coupled with their remaining schedule indicates an opportunity to strike is there.

Someone like Za'Darius Smith could be an option. The Cleveland Browns have already shipped wide receiver Amari Cooper out of the organization as they look to begin their rebuild. Quarterback Deshaun Watson's fully guaranteed contract is having a devastating ripple effect on everything else. And it's only going to get worse in the coming years.

Smith is an accomplished pass-rusher with 63 career sacks. He's also renowned for being a ferocious presence against the run. However, his age and having two years remaining on his contract after this season make this a move that would go away from what Peters has built up to now.
