Qwuantrezz Knight - Commanders DB
The Washington Commanders have too many cooks in the safety room. Adam Peters didn't do much to fortify the unit in free agency or the draft, but new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones and his creative scheme have already begun to bring more out of the available options.
Nick Cross is the alpha after joining the Commanders in free agency. Jeremy Reaves will have a role to play, and all hope is not lost with Quan Martin just yet either. Will Harris hasn't shone this summer, but his experience might make him difficult to cut when push comes to shove.
Others such as Tyler Owens and Percy Butler will also be considered. There aren't many surprises coming to the fore, which doesn't bode well for Qwuantrezz Knight's chances of making the team.
Knight is another with previous connections to Peters from their time together on the San Francisco 49ers. He hasn't played a competitive down since 2023 with the Arizona Cardinals, and although he is a strong motivator, it appears as if the numbers game will be his undoing.
The undrafted free agent out of UCLA won't be going down without a fight, but Knight's situation looks increasingly bleak.
Jeffrey M'ba - Commanders DL
There was some intrigue about undrafted defensive lineman Jeffrey M'ba when he joined the club this spring. The Commanders gave him $245,000 guaranteed on his deal to beat off interest from others, so it's clear that those in power also had high hopes.
Unfortunately, it's not quite gone according to plan.
M'ba has been a work in progress throughout the offseason. He hasn't been able to force his way up the depth chart, and with Charles Omenihu and Deatrich Wise Jr. (when healthy) set to be deployed on Washington's 3-4 defensive front under Daronte Jones, it doesn't leave much room for the rest.
To make matters worse, M'ba was outshone in the Commanders' preseason opener. Ricky Barber and even veteran Shy Tuttle were standing out on tape more than the first-year pro. With just a couple of weeks left until final cuts, that is a massive problem.
Perhaps M'ba will be brought back onto the practice squad to continue his development, but there is just no telling for sure. At 26, the interior lineman is not exactly a young development project, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Commanders cut their losses entirely without a strong end to the summer.
It was never going to be easy for M'ba, but he'll be disappointed not to have done more to impose himself.
