4 big winners from the Commanders 2023 NFL Draft

Charles Leno Jr. – Commanders OT
There was a glaring need to reinforce the offensive line early in the 2023 NFL Draft. This unit has more questions than answers heading into their offseason program, which could cause further complications if the projected starting five don’t hit the ground running immediately.
Despite many analysts projecting the Commanders with an offensive lineman over the first two rounds, Ron Rivera and his staff went in a different direction. After picking up two defensive backs in consecutive picks to begin the draft, attention then went to the offensive line as Ricky Stromberg and Braeden Daniels came into the fold.
With both prospects expected to fill out rotational roles on the interior next season, this indicates supreme confidence in Charles Leno Jr. at the left tackle spot. Something that could have gone either way for the veteran considering how much interest there was in prospects such as Darnell Wright throughout the evaluation process.
Leno was the best of a bad bunch across Washington’s protection last season. He is also a strong leader within the locker room and has an outstanding community presence, so it’s not hard to see why the Commanders built around him rather than seeking a replacement.
There’s a good chance Leno performs better with upgrades across the board. Whether it’s enough for an extended stay beyond the current campaign is another matter.
