Commanders release statement after Shaka Toney suspension

Whether you agree with the NFL’s gambling policy or not given the increased influence sports betting has on the league financially, rules are rules. Something that Shaka Toney found out to his cost.

The defensive end was suspended indefinitely for violating specific rules relating to betting on games. Toney will miss the entire 2023 campaign and considering his current depth chart standing, could easily be released to formally end his time with the Washington Commanders.

The team released a statement in the wake of Toney’s suspension, indicating their support of the NFL’s actions. However, no immediate repercussions emerged for the player in a similar way the Detroit Lions dealt with Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore, who were both released almost immediately after the news became public.

"“We have been made aware of the suspension of Shaka Toney. We have cooperated fully with the NFL’s investigation since receiving notice and support the league’s findings and actions.”"

Toney became a core special teamer despite not seeing much time on defensive rotation in 2022. Everyone makes mistakes and although this is a big one where Toney is concerned, the chances of being released could be high depending on how things unfold during the 2023 NFL Draft.
