What does the future hold for team president Jason Wright in 2023 with the Washington Commanders about to be sold by Dan Snyder?

Jubilation enveloped the Washington Commanders fanbase as reports that Dan Snyder was finally selling the team after months of speculation surfaced. It’s been a long time coming after more than 20 years of misery, which leaves the ownership group led by Josh Harris with a steep task to get this once-proud franchise among the NFL heavyweights once everything gets confirmed.

While this marks the start of what will hopefully become a profitable period in franchise history, it leaves some already around facing uncertain futures. Ron Rivera’s coaching seat went from lukewarm to piping hot in the blink of an eye, with others also looking nervously over their shoulders with landmark changes on the horizon.

Commanders president Jason Wright faces an uncertain future

One such individual is team president Jason Wright. It’s been a mixed bag for the front office figure since his appointment, which was recently highlighted superbly by Ben Standig of The Athletic when discussing his long-term aspirations in Washington.

"“While (Jason) Wright’s universal popularity shrunk with the fan base following his heralded hire, putting the onus for all gaffes on (Dan) Snyder will be easy. The new owner already held an unofficial interview with Wright, as the president conducted the tour of the facilities and walked Harris and others through a management presentation.”"

Standig’s point about blaming everything on Snyder might be the best course of action. However, Harris and Magic Johnson – two influential figures within the ownership group – have experience with winning sports franchises and if they don’t like what Wright is selling in terms of vision, then it’s unlikely his stay will be prolonged.

Wright came into the Commanders with a blossoming reputation and has done some decent work overall. However, the rebrand, association with Snyder, and how terribly the Sean Taylor tribute was handled mean the jury is still out.

There is also the question of whether Wright wants to stay on long-term. Especially if the new owners want him to focus more on the football side of things rather than the overall organization infrastructure away from the gridiron.

This notion was also discussed by Standig, who claimed that there is an openness between both parties for Wright to stick around if the situation is right.

"“Expectations have him open to remaining on board so he and his staff could continue working on executed projects and those that entered into a limbo stage late in the Snyder tenure, like a new stadium. One question: Does the former NFL running back desire an expanded role that would reach into football operations?”"

Considering how much money the Harris group is shelling out to Snyder, keeping everything the same is an absolute impossibility. There will be more conversations once the league approves Washington’s sale and if they don’t go well, Wright could be free to pursue other interests.

Only time will tell. But the main thing above all else is that Snyder is no longer part of the organization’s future.
