Commanders won’t pick up Chase Young’s option

Not only do the Washington Commanders have to focus on recruitment during free agency, but they must also come to a decision regarding Chase Young‘s future. The defensive end is due for his fifth-year option heading into Year 4 of his professional career, which is a complex debate for those in power given the player’s lack of involvement over the last two seasons.

Young looked like a player with immense promise en route to winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020. However, the former Ohio State star has featured in just 12 games since, and with 1.5 sacks during that span, the jury is still well and truly out.

Giving Young another year to prove himself might be something for the Commanders to consider. But with Montez Sweat also looking for a bumper contract extension in 2024, they could adopt a wait-and-see approach with the No. 2 overall selection.

There’s certainly enough in Young’s locker to have a major bounce-back campaign with some extra motivation on his shoulders. In this scenario, the Commanders would end up paying more in the long run, which we’ve already seen this offseason with Daron Payne’s situation.

This has been the topic of great discussion among fans. Washington invested a substantial amount in Young and wants him to succeed, but not picking up his fifth-year option cannot be ruled out based on his current career trajectory.
