4 free-agent running backs the Commanders could sign in 2023

Commanders could sign Jerick McKinnon
As stated previously, Eric Bieniemy is well-connected around the NFL and has worked with some exceptional playmakers throughout his career. This could benefit the Washington Commanders exponentially if the right opportunities present themselves in free agency.
Obviously, it would take something special to further enhance the team’s running back options. But judging by how well Jerick McKinnon performed for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022 en route to their Super Bowl triumph, it’s a viable option that offers something a little different.
J.D. McKissic was supposed to be the primary pass-catcher – the third-down back with safe hands and slick route-running. Injuries and a lack of involvement make him a potential cut this spring and if that turns out to be the case, McKinnon should be in play.
The former third-round pick knows exactly what Bieniemy would demand on offense, so his transition to the Commanders would go off without a hitch. McKinnon might be on the wrong side of 30 years old, but his explosiveness last season indicates there is plenty of life left in his production.
Kansas City will fight hard to keep him around – albeit on a short-term deal. But if Bieniemy and the Commanders also throw their hat into the ring, this is a potential dark horse signing that would end McKissic’s time with the organization along the way.
