4 high-risk free agents the Commanders could target in 2023

Commanders could sign Irv Smith Jr.
- Tight End | Minnesota Vikings
Eric Bieniemy’s reliance on tight-end production as part of his west-coast-based offense is renowned. Therefore, the Washington Commanders should explore alternative options to those already on the roster.
Bieniemy will provide Logan Thomas, John Bates, and Cole Turner with chances to thrive. If he feels like more is needed, the Commanders will seek another consistent pass-catcher in free agency of the 2023 NFL Draft.
If the Commanders want an instant solution that could be worth its weight in gold, then Irv Smith Jr. should be on their shortlist. The former Alabama star has all the talent in the world, but injuries have hindered his progress considerably over the last two years and left the Minnesota Vikings with no option other than to acquire T.J. Hockenson via trade.
Smith came back late in the season, which is a positive. However, it appears unlikely that the Vikings will keep him around considering Hockenson’s impressive impact throughout the campaign.
If the player stays free of injury next season, this would instantly upgrade Washington’s pass-catching options at the tight end position. But it could all go horribly wrong if Smith endures further complications in a different environment.
