Commanders could draft Michael Mayer

  • Tight End | Notre Dame Fighting Irish

One of the primary reasons for Eric Bieniemy’s success with the Kansas City Chiefs was production from the tight end position. Travis Kelce is one of the all-time greats for a reason, so even though replicating his elite contribution is difficult, any upturn would be beneficial for the Washington Commanders in 2023.

Logan Thomas could be one player who benefits more than most from Bieniemy’s presence. But if the offensive coordinator decides more is needed, then examining a talented class of tight ends emerging from the college ranks should be considered.

There seems to be a widespread differential about where Michael Mayer might be drafted. However, he is arguably the most complete prospect at the position that can impact the game in all important areas.

Mayer is a smooth route-runner with crisp hands and a physicality to make things happen across the middle. His blocking already looks NFL-ready, so it’s not hard to see why Bieniemy could bang the table for his services if he drops out of the first round.

Adding Mayer to Washington’s current passing attack would be an asset. And if there’s anyone who can assure he hits the ground running upon arriving at the next level, it’s Bieniemy.
