Washington Commanders vs Detroit Lions Best Bets for Week 2
By Jerry Trotta
The Washington Commanders will look to move to 2-0 on the season after their exhilarating season-opening win over Jacksonville. The Detroit Lions represent another winnable game for Ron Rivera’s group, but it won’t come easy and the odds reflect that as the Commanders opened as a -2.5 underdog this week.
That line has since shrunk to -1.5, so Detroit is still favored. In fact, it marks the first time the Lions are favored on the spread in 24 games. It’s the NFL’s longest streak since 1966 and is poised to snap so long as Jared Goff stays healthy between now and kickoff.
We already gave our predictions for the spread and over/under, and offered up our favorite prop bets for the game. With kickoff 24 hours away, let’s combine all of the above and share our three favorite bets for the games.
Commanders vs Lions Best Bets for Week 2
3. Cole Turner anytime touchdown scorer (+1,000)
This is undoubtedly a dart throw, but you can’t deny the appeal of +1,000 odds. You don’t even have to wager a ton of money to receive a big payout if it hits … and if you followed the Commanders during training camp you know Turner was one of Carson Wentz’s go-to targets during red zone drills.
Look for the QB-WR duo to pick up right where they left in camp this Sunday. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound tight end is a matchup nightmare for any defense and we like him to be on the receiving end of a touchdown against the Lions, who will already have to contend with Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, Logan Thomas and Antonio Gibson in the red zone.
If you make a $100 wager on this bet, you win $1,000.
2. Antonio Gibson over 57.5 rushing yards (-114)
Both the passing and receiving yard props were tempting here, but the Eagles’ rushing attack ran rampant against Detroit’s defense last week. Miles Sanders rushed 13 times for 96 yards, good for 7.3 yards per carry, while Jalen Hurts added 90 yards on 7.1 yards per attempt and Kenneth Gainwell finished with 20 yards on five carries.
You mean to tell us Gibson, who has the backfield all to himself right now as far as rushing attempts are concerned, can’t eclipse 57 yards? Funnily enough, Gibson tallied 58 rushing yards on 14 carries against the Jaguars in Week 1. Assuming he has similar-to-more-volume, Gibson should crack 60 yards pretty comfortably.
1. Commanders on the moneyline (+107)
Last week, we picked the Commanders to cover a -2.5 spread. We needed to sweat it out, but it came through and that’s all that matters. With a home date against the Eagles on deck, this screams of a trap game, but we like Ron Rivera to not only have his side ready for battle, but to win outright against the Lions.
We thought long and hard about playing it safe and taking Washington to cover the spread, but 1.5 points leaves little margin for error. Though picking them to win altogether is a gamble, it’s a risk worth taking given the spread’s inflexibility.

Week 2 Commanders vs Lions Latest Odds, Spread, Over/Under
As of Saturday, the Commanders are +1.5 point underdogs on the spread, making their +107 moneyline odds (win outright) very juicy. The over/under is set at 48.5 points, so Vegas clearly expects a barnburner to unfold at Ford Field.
