Commanders make ridiculous geography gaffe on Week 1 gear
By Jerry Trotta
The Washington Commanders’ inaugural season is officially underway.
The hope is Carson Wentz and a rejuvenated offense, coupled with expected positive regression from the defense after a nightmarish 2021, will help Washington clinch just its second playoff berth since the 2015 season.
By all accounts, things got off to a positive start. The FedEx Field seats are packed with raucous fans repping burgundy and gold apparel, making it virtually impossible to pinpoint the very few black and teal jerseys in the stands.
Of course, the Commanders are hopeful FedEx Field itself doesn’t cause the team any unnecessary embarrassment this year after its malfunction-filled 2021. Folks will recall the sewage pipe burst in Week 1, and a railing full of Eagles fans collapsing and nearly striking quarterback Jalen Hurts.
And who could forget Taylor Heinicke spotting a rogue pair of scissors on the field in the fourth quarter (!) against the Cowboys?
We’re happy to report FedEx Field is fully functioning thus far. Unfortunately, though, Washington wasn’t able to avoid embarrassing itself before kickoff. Would anyone like to purchase a Commanders mug with outlines of the state Washington?
Commanders selling team mugs with outlines of Washington state before Week 1 clash against the Jaguars.
Per a team official, these mugs were not being sold inside the stadium, which I suppose is a silver lining given less fans were exposed to them. Per the Washington Post’s Nicki Jhabvala, the cups were for sale by the Commanders’ official team truck right outside the team shop. So much for that silver lining, right?
The good news is the mugs have been removed, but the fact they were even being sold in the first place (who approved this???) is flat-out alarming.
We’re not going to harp on this. There’s football being played and that’s ultimately all we care about today. Hopefully, the Commanders send out a press release of some sort addressing the error, because this is as bad as it gets.
