Tier 2

Tier 2 names could receive plenty of attention, but this category can best be described as dark horses that actually have a chance.  In other words, these names are not likely to be considered, but don’t discard them until we hear otherwise.

Renegades While there are a few negative connotations with this name, it has a fair amount of support.  Is it a name that could resonate with fans of the Washington Football Team?  It’s a cool name, but it will probably receive little to no attention in Ashburn.

Red Tails The historical and military connections are obvious, but this is a name that references a particular ethnic group and that could pose a few issues.  Washington is not likely to choose any name that refers to any ethnicities ever again, no matter how positive it may seem to be with the fans.

Sentinels – This is a really neat name and could work with the fans and critics alike.  It’s unknown if there is any kind of support for this name from the powers that be in the front office.  Of the four Tier 2 names, Sentinels could be the best option.

Redhawks / Red Hawks – Like Red Tails, it feels a bit forced and something of appeasement to fans of the former name.  While Redwolves is popular, it is probably the only “red” name that is receiving any consideration.  It also seems to be closely identified with the Seattle Seahawks.

Current ranking in our estimation:

  • 1.  Sentinels
  • 2.  Renegades
  • 3.  Red Tails
  • 4.  Redhawks / Red Hawks

Keep an eye on Sentinels.  It could gain some traction in the coming weeks and move into the Tier 2 category.  Other than Redwolves, the term “red” in any name is nothing more than a dream for fans who desire to have any kind of connection to the former name.
