Tier 3

The Tier 3 names have a small chance of becoming the future identity, but it is nothing more than a longshot.  If the front office continues to eliminate names one by one as we recently witnessed, the Tier 3 group will survive the initial cuts, but nothing more.

Washington Football Team Yes, the current placeholder does have a small chance of remaining.  Some members of the media have suggested that the current name would remain, but it is very unlikely.  The front office would not take on an 18-month journey just to keep the name.

Washington Football Club – It is a slight change from the current name, but the reasons that “Washington Football Team” will not be the name going forward apply to Washington Football Club as well.

Burgundy and Gold – This name, which would represent the team’s colors, has gained a bit of traction with some fans and a few members of the media.  Frankly, it’s not a bad name, but it is generic – much like we see in the two aforementioned names in this Tier 3 level. It has little chance of occurring.

Generals, Admirals, Colonels, Commodores – Using high-ranking military names for team names is nothing new in American sports and one could be chosen for Washington.  Other than the Tier 1 Commanders, these military ranking names are unlikely to receive any consideration, but it still can’t be fully ruled out.

Current ranking in our estimation:

  • 1.  Burgundy and Gold
  • 2.  Washington Football Team
  • 3.  Washington Football Club
  • 4.  Military rankings

If there is one name that could somehow find its way to becoming the team name, it is the Burgundy and Gold.  Embracing the team colors as the name may not be the most popular choice, but it would be a safe option in today’s charged environment.
