Washington Football Team: Potential cap casualties to target this offseason
By Jonathan Eig
WR Marquise Goodwin, Eagles
Back in 2017, it appeared that Goodwin, after languishing in Buffalo on his rookie deal, was about to become a breakout receiver. As a part-time starter in San Francisco, his blazing speed resulted in 56 catches and a 17.2 yards per catch average.
Then the injuries came. Kendrick Bourne moved ahead of him. Then Deebo Samuel arrived. Goodwin fell further and further on the depth chart. He was eventually traded to Philadelphia. With a young son on the way, Goodwin chose to opt out of the 2020 season.
That meant his modest one-year contract carried over to 2021. The Eagles have already moved on from veteran DeSean Jackson and will almost certainly part company with Alshon Jeffrey. Injuries prevented both from being reliable players in the past couple of seasons.
With youngsters like Jalen Reagor and John Hightower on hand, Philly may well choose to release Goodwin as well, despite his cap-friendly contract.
If they do, Washington might want to take a low-cost gamble on a receiver who, if he could ever stay healthy, would provide a much-needed deep threat. Washington will almost certainly look for a major upgrade at receiver either through free agency or in the draft.
Goodwin would not be that guy. But further down the depth chart, he could be a genuine diamond-in-the-rough.
