Things are about to get interesting.

As February turns over into March, tension and excitement around the National Football League begins to rise to levels that will remain high straight through the NFL draft at the end of April. Teams are making decisions right now that will have a major impact on their success in 2021 and beyond. The Washington Football Team is no exception.

We are already beginning to see salary cap cuts around the league. There have been two major trades involving quarterbacks, and there may be more in the offing. Soon, franchise tags will be assigned and long-term extensions negotiated.

After that, when the free agency signing period formally begins in the second half of March, fans’ interest in their team’s projections will soar.

Right now, we are in the calm before the storm. We are in a time of rumors and pipe dreams. All in preparation for the shopping spree to come.

We have already looked at potential free agent signings, from both the pools of restricted and unrestricted players. We have discussed trade options. We have seen multiple mock draft scenarios play out.

Cap casualties Washington Football Team could target

So today, we go off the beaten path just a bit and look at potential salary-cap casualties who might one day find a home on the Washington Football Team.

These players are currently under contract with other teams. And were they to become available, that would mean their current teams deemed them unworthy of retaining – at least at their current salaries. Within the past week, the Carolina Panthers parted ways with defensive tackle Kawann Short and safety Tre Boston, and at least one of them could interest Washington.

Here are five other players who have been mentioned in salary-cap-cut rumors who might also fit in DC.
