Opening Day is less than eight months away, and the Washington Football Team does not know who its starting quarterback will be in the upcoming season. We are at DEFCON 4.

Now that Matthew Stafford is off the table, here is a revised assessment of who Washington might be considering for the job of field general.

I should note that not only is Stafford gone, but so is Jared Goff. Though it only became obvious over the past week or two, the Rams were clearly willing to move on from Goff for the right offer. And during the brief time that he was for sale, Goff should have been an intriguing option for Washington.

But that is moot. I am not disappointed in how the Stafford drama unfolded. Of course, he would have been a major upgrade for the Washington Football Team, but I agree entirely with JP Finlay’s assessment of the potential trade. You do not trade young for old unless you are one or two moves away from championship status. Washington is not there yet. You don’t make that deal.

So who do you get? I think there’s a 70 percent chance that Kyle Allen will be Washington’s starter come opening day, 2021. I give Alex Smith/Taylor Heinicke a combined 5 percent chance of being that starter. Which leaves about 25 percent open to whoever you want.

Here’s a list of 25 quarterbacks who could be that guy. They are ranked in the order in which I would want them. Obviously enormously subjective. Feel free to consult your thesaurus to look up words to tell me just how wrong I am. That’s kind of what I’m here for.

Oh, and this will be the first of a two-part series. Today, it’s just a ranking of who I would want. Next time, it’ll be a ranking of which of these guys is most likely to actually be on the team in 2021.
