Most intriguing option, a few non-options

Among other free agent options, Washington demonstrated very clearly in the 2020 offseason that the new regime had little interest in signing older players to big-money deals. I’m sure they would make exceptions for the right player, but I don’t see them signing any older veteran unless it was to a very team-friendly deal.

That is why I do not see them pursuing Alejandro Villanueva, recently of the Steelers. Villanueva has been a stalwart left tackle for many years and those are not easy to find. But he will also turn 33 this September, which makes him older than anyone lineman currently on the roster. It’s unclear what the market will be for Villanueva, but unless Washington can score a real bargain, I think they will look elsewhere.

The player who intrigues me the most right now is Buffalo’s Daryl Williams. Williams is a massive lineman who played for Ron Rivera in Carolina from 2015 to 2019. He joined Buffalo on a one-year deal in 2020.

Williams had a strong season playing right tackle for the Bills, but the reason I like him is his versatility. Williams has played every position other than center during his career and would be a very strong addition whether he wins a starting job or not.

Williams makes more sense to me than two other players with Carolina connections – Mike Remmers and Taylor Moton. Both are arguably as good or better than Williams, but both are also primarily right tackles (where Morgan Moses currently resides), and Moton, only 26 years old, would almost certainly cost a lot more.
