Why Brandon Scherff is so important for the Washington Football Team

First and foremost, the Washington Football Team needs to re-sign right guard Brandon Scherff. After wisely locking up center Chase Roullier before he hit free agency, re-signing Scherff means that the entire offensive line would be back in 2021. With the presumed healthy return of Geron Christian and 2020 draftee Saahdiq Charles, that would provide a solid base on which to build.

On the other hand, failing to re-sign Scherff leaves a massive hole. As of today, his spot would either be filled by Martin, or one of two entirely unproven second-year players – Charles or Keith Ismael.

Besides, Scherff was an All-Pro this year, and deserved the honor, as our own Jacob Camenker wrote earlier this month.

"Because of Scherff’s strong performance, he, Morgan Moses, and Chase Roullier were able to open up running lanes for Antonio Gibson and Co. at the running back spot while also keeping the team’s four quarterbacks clean. On the year, Scherff played 857 snaps for Washington. He was whistled for just two penalties all year long and gave up just three sacks. Those numbers may not be the best marks of his career, but it’s an impressive achievement nonetheless considering the constant shuffling that was going on at the quarterback spot. And, it’s an improvement over his nine-penalty, one-sack performance from last year."

I recognize that finding a long-term quarterback is job one for the front office, but I don’t think you can overestimate how important re-signing Scherff is as well. Regardless of what they do with the QB position, retaining Scherff is paramount.
