Washington Football Team signs Jeff Badet to roster, cuts Tony Brown

It’s taken a while, but the Washington Football Team’s wide receiver unit is starting to develop into a legitimately intriguing unit.

At the start of the season, Terry McLaurin was the lone reliable threat in the Washington Football Team‘s passing attack, and even now, he remains by far the most qualified to earn the trust of the team’s quarterback, whoever that may be from week to week.

But as the 2020 season has developed, so has Washington’s offense. Not into a great unit, or even a good unit, necessarily. But flashes continue to be shown, at a growing frequency. Logan Thomas had a career game two weeks ago, and against the Giants, despite the loss, 6-foot-5 wideout Cam Sims showed out. The Washington Football Team is starting to get a little bit of everything in their pass catching group, and today, they made a signing to reinforce that notion.

According to the team’s official website, the Washington Football Team made an internal move to further solidify the potential in their receiving core. As of yesterday at 4:30 PM, Washington released undrafted free agent wide receiver Tony Brown from their active roster, and in his place, they promoted practice squad receiver Jeff Badet.

Badet, a signing from last month, was elevated from the practice squad for the team’s Week 9 contest against the New York Giants, as well as the team’s Week 7 bout with the Dallas Cowboys, but he wasn’t actually made an official member of the 53-man roster until the announcement of this move.

Badet, 26, entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018, first joining the Minnesota Vikings. He left the Vikings after preseason in 2019 and joined up with the Dallas Renegades of the now-defunct XFL in the following offseason. Badet scheduled a couple NFL tryouts after the XFL ceased operations, but he wouldn’t get back to the NFL until Washington signed him to their practice squad in mid-September.

Now, Badet has a chance to once again make an impact on the football field. It’s clear that the Washington Football Team likes his physical abilities, and they have good reason to; at his NFL pro day in the 2018 offseason, Badet, standing at 5-foot-11, 181, logged a 4.27 40-yard dash and a 39.5-inch vertical.

The speed and explosiveness is there in spades, and with McLaurin’s elite receiving skill set and Sims’ size and physicality, Badet could end up being a suitable compliment in the receiving core. Time will tell, but this is a high-upside move for the Washington Football Team.
