Six Washington Football Team players to jettison in 2021
Here are six Washington Football Team players to jettison in 2021.
During each offseason, the Washington Football Team typically adds several new players in free agency and jettisons players for varying reasons. The upcoming free agency frenzy in a few months will see more of the same in 2021.
Welcome to our latest offseason look for 2021. Today, we will take a quick glance at six players for the Washington Football Team that should be released before or just after free agency arrives next March.
Some choices are easy and some are rather difficult to imagine, but team building requires leadership to make the tough calls. Fielding the best players possible should always be the goal and finding role players and others for depth purposes. Players generally understand the business and we wish them well in their futures and thank each one for their commitment to the Washington Football Team.
This list will include current team members that are on the current roster, injured reserve, and inactive players. Let’s get right to the list.
Cornelius Lucas
Offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas has been a decent one year stopgap for the Washington Football Team in 2020. The depth he has provided has been pretty much as expected. Washington can always use good depth at tackle, but they also need an infusion of talented youth. In 2021, it will be time to move on from Lucas and thank him for his dedication to the organization in 2020.
Peyton Barber
Peyton Barber was a very talented running back at one time in the NFL, but his time has basically come to an end as a football player. Barber has often been a target of our wrath in recent weeks and while we can appreciate his contributions this season, it is truly time to move on. We won’t put up his latest stats at this time. That has been a weekly feature, but what it demonstrated was how ineffective he has become this season. If Barber is not released soon, then it should be after the 2020 season.
Wes Martin
Wes Martin has been a source of constant ridicule and scorn this season from Washington fans, and most of it is deserved. When Martin made a few appearances late in the 2019 season due to injuries along the line, he held his own and was proving to be a solid solution for depth purposes. Martin was crowned the starter at left guard to start the 2020 season, but his efforts at pass protection and the rushing offense were abysmal. It is time to send Martin packing in 2021.
Bryce Love
How long can a team wait? Two years? Four years? How long? Bryce Love has a lot of talent and the former Stanford running back figured to be in the lineup by now. Visions of Love running north and south for major chunks of yardage danced in the heads of fans and coaches alike. Okay, the poor holiday reference is a bit early here. If Love does not see the field in 2020 (and this is a distinct possibility), it is time to move in a different direction.
Josh Harvey-Clemons
Remember him? Josh Harvey-Clemons decided to take the COVID-19 opt-out for 2020 and while that was his prerogative, due to he and his kids having asthma, it was possibly a bad idea from a football standpoint. Cole Holcomb is beginning to assert himself at linebacker. Harvey-Clemons has enjoyed some good moments with Washington, but his impact over the years has been minimal. The team may be inclined to move on in 2021.
Caleb Brantley
Like Harvey-Clemons, Caleb Brantley took advantage of the COVID-19 opt-out as well. Brantley was chosen in the sixth round by Cleveland in 2017 after the highly-touted defensive lineman had dealt with legal issues, but he actually had little to no impact with the Browns. The Washington Football Team placed him on the roster for 2019, but he went on injured reserve after one week. His NFL career is a bust and it is time to bid him farewell in a few months.
These players had a dream of playing in the NFL or simply making an NFL roster. They did – and that should count for something. Perhaps it wasn’t the dream they were expecting, but that is life in a league where such dreams can be gone in an instant. We wish these players good luck in their future endeavors, but it is time for the Washington to move in a different direction.
