No. 5 – DL Daron Payne

Daron Payne is an unsung hero on the defensive line and rarely generates headlines.  Guess what?  That is a good thing.  Defensive tackles rarely get the recognition that is bestowed on defensive ends and edge rushers.  If defensive tackles do generate any buzz, it is usually something negative.  Payne typically generates some noise during a game, but you never hear anything negative about him.

As another one of the defensive players from Alabama, Payne has been solid as a multi-ton boulder since his arrival to Team Park in 2018.  He is arguably the most important member of the defensive unit and Payne’s dedication to the game is unmatched.

Washington would suffer greatly on defense if he had to miss any time due to injury – Payne is that talented and more.  He isn’t a vocal leader, but this former ‘Bama stud commands the attention of his fellow defensive unit members based solely on his level of play each game.

Obviously, Washington’s defensive line is one of the best in the league, and plenty of talent has been built around him.  The defense needs just a few more tweaks and it will shine because of players like Daron Payne.  One more significant point – Payne doesn’t turn 24 until late next spring.  He could be around for a very long time.  Opposing offenses are not happy about it.  Washington’s defensive coaches are very happy about it.
