Round 1

Trey Lance, Quarterback, North Dakota State – 6-4, 226

The WFT has no choice.  Haskins was the future until he proved that he wasn’t the future.  The preferred quarterback in this class will be chosen first overall – that is a given.  Another quarterback is expected to go second or third overall and then it will be Lance’s phone that rings when Washington is on the clock.

Lance suddenly burst into prominence early in the 2019 season for the Bison.  He was named the MVP of the FCS national championship game against James Madison.  He also won the Jerry Rice Award and Walter Payton Award for the 2019 season.

Not bad for a player that most Power 5 schools thought would be a better linebacker or safety after high school.

Lance has the height and size you look for in an NFL quarterback.  His leadership skills are top-notch and he is very popular in the locker room – even with his very humble attitude.

Of course, none of these positive attributes will necessarily translate to success at the next level for Trey Lance, but character does count in the NFL.  If you are looking for comparisons, Lance is a mixture of Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson, and Carson Wentz (during his pre-injury season).  Think of a much taller and more athletic Russell Wilson – potentially.

The quarterback with two first names will likely need to spend some time on the sidelines for much of his first season.  After that period of time on the bench, the potential is unlimited.
