The Washington Football Team reportedly won’t have to play against Eagles RB Miles Sanders in Week 1.

The Philadelphia Eagles are pretty banged up heading into their Week 1 contest against the Washington Football Team. That’s one of the primary reasons that fans seem confident that Washington will have a good chance to win this contest and kickstart the Ron Rivera era the right way.

On offense, Philadelphia will be without two starting offensive linemen, Andre Dillard and Brandon Brooks. Carson Wentz has also dealt with groin tightness lately, and there are some questions about whether or not Lane Johnson will suit up as well.

And now, the Eagles are going to be without another key member of their offense. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Miles Sanders won’t be traveling with the team as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury he suffered during camp.

With Sanders out, Boston Scott will be the lead back for the Eagles with Corey Clement serving as the change-of-pace and pass-catching backup. Rookie Jason Huntley, a fifth-round pick claimed off waivers from the Detroit Lions, will likely suit up as the third back.

This is big-time news for Washington. They already have a strong defensive front that would’ve had a chance to slow down Sanders anyway. Scott is smaller than Sanders and while he has some dynamic ability, he’s still not quite as explosive as the Penn State product. Washington’s front should — and Daron Payne, in particular — be able to contain Scott well if they come in focused and ready to play.

Sanders’ absence just gives Washington another checkmark on the defensive side of the ball. If Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio can help the team take advantage of the Eagles’ injuries, they should have a chance to contain the offense and limit their rival to 20 points.

In addition to Sanders, edge rusher Derek Barnett will not be making the trip to Washington. Simply put, Washington has a massive opportunity in front of them and they have to take advantage of it.
