The Washington Redskins are expected to officially retire their nickname on Monday.

After a whirlwind week and a half, it appears that the Washington Redskins will officially be retiring their name on Monday.

According to Ben Fischer of The Sports Business Journal, the Redskins will announce the retirement of the Redskins moniker on Monday. The decision to do some comes just 11 days after the team’s naming-rights sponsor, FedEx, requested that the team change the name.

While Redskins fans are likely itching to hear the new nickname, it may take a little bit longer before that can be official because of the trademarking process.

"The new nickname will not be announced immediately because trademark issues are pending, the sources said, but insiders were told today that the “thorough review” announced July 3 has concluded. The team felt it was important to remove any doubts as to the future of the name, one source said."

So, for at least a little while longer, fans can debate whether Redwolves, Warriors, or any other leading contenders are the best options for the squad. But either way, the team will have a new nickname soon.

That said, it’s possible that the ‘Skins could continue to vet potential nicknames and just play the 2020 season as the Washington Football Club, or something of that ilk. Daniel Snyder and Co. would probably prefer to just settle on a nickname, logo design, and uniform design before the season begins, but with training camp right around the corner, they may not be able to get everything worked out before then. It will surely be interesting to see how long this process is ongoing, or if they’ve already begun attempts at acquiring the trademark for the new name that they want.

Ron Rivera likely will view this announcement as good news. He wanted to get the name change taken care of as soon as possible, presumably so it wouldn’t be a distraction for the coaching staff or players during the 2020 season. If the team settles on a new name before camp, that will be one less bit of outside noise for a team that is focusing on building a new culture.
