When a player lingers, and when they remain for years on end, providing the same consistent play that they always have, we sometimes take it for granted, and come to expect the routine to carry on. These players, with both the longevity to stay on the field, and the consistency to maintain a high level of play, are perhaps the most under-appreciated in football. Few embody this persona better than Darrell Green.

Green was a 5-foot-9 cornerback. He played 20 years in the NFL. Often dubbed the “Ageless Wonder” for his exploits, Green played until he was 42 years old. In such a physical game, such a thing rarely happens, save for kickers, punters, and Tom Brady.

Green was never a dominant player at his position, but with his speed, smarts, and quickness, both with his processing and his direction changes, Green made a name for himself as a dangerous adversary in the Redskins’ defensive backfield.

With the Redskins, Green went to three Super Bowls, winning two of them. He earned seven Pro Bowl nods, and was an All-Pro selection in 1991. His accolades speak for themselves, and his gold jacket was well-deserved. Rumor has it he still wanders, seeking out radar guns, running 4.4’s even at almost 60 years old.
